Go on, get busy!
For the crafty souls out there, it is very easy and economical to make your own room divider! Not only will it have your personal touch, you can make it exactly how you want it and pay much less for it as well.
Before you get started, figure out what type of room divider you want. There are three styles that are typically available – a folding screen, a flat panel and a hanging curtain.
The flat panel is the easiest to make. The flat panel design is constructed with a frame that can be wood, metal, etc. and because it is just one panel, you’ll need some sort of legs to keep it standing. The beauty of constructing the frame yourself is that you get to design the size and materials.
Once you’ve created the frame, measure the amount of fabric you’ll need to tightly cover the frame. An efficient way to cover the frame tightly is to use staples in the back of the wood. By laying the frame on top of your fabric selection, you can easily pull the fabric around the edges and staple it down. This hides the frame and gives you a clean edge.
As far as a leg and foot go, be creative! You can make this or find something sturdy to use. As long as it is strong enough to support the panel anything goes.
The folding screen is made exactly like the flat panel, but it has numerous panels. The average divider has 3 to 4 panels. The only difference in construction is that you won’t need the feet - instead you’ll need metal hinges to put between the panels allowing them to move against each other. Check out this handmade room divider one blogger made. It is a very cute and practical way to make one and she even put her personality into it by her choice of fabric.
You can use whatever you’d like inside the panels. Some have glass, stained wood, fabric, rice paper – the options are endless.
The last room divider is made with fabric, dangling beads, etc. All you need is to find a way to attach it to the ceiling. I recommend a track, which will add versatility to your divider.
For inspiration and ideas just cruise around the internet, there are lots of examples that you can recreate with your own style. Let me know how it turns out, I’d love new ideas and pics! Good Luck!
